Recommended tools

Tools we actually recommend.

A remodel goes better when you show up with a clear idea of what you want. These are the tools we point clients to — organized by where you are in the process.

Phase 1

Dreaming & Inspiration

Figure out what you actually like before anyone prices anything.

Houzz

The biggest library of real remodel photos on the internet.

iOS / Android / Web · Free

Build ideabooks by room and style, and save specific details — tile layouts, hardware finishes, layout ideas — to share with your design team. An organized ideabook tells us more in two minutes than a folder of screenshots does in twenty.

Pinterest

Great for identifying your style patterns.

iOS / Android / Web · Free

Pin freely for a few weeks, then look at what keeps repeating — that repetition is your actual taste, and it's more useful to a designer than any single photo.

Phase 2

Planning & Measuring

Get rough dimensions and test layouts so your first contractor conversation starts further along.

Magicplan

Point your phone around a room and get a usable floor plan.

iOS / Android · Free tier · paid from ~$10/mo

Not contract-accurate, but a rough measured plan makes your first conversation with a contractor dramatically more productive — we can talk about your actual room instead of guessing at it.

Polycam

Turns your phone into a 3D scanner.

iOS / Android · Free tier · Pro for exports

Works best on LiDAR iPhones (the Pro models). Walk a room and get a 3D model you can revisit anytime — genuinely handy for remembering what was where once demo starts.

Your Phone's Measure App

Built in on iPhone, and on some Android phones. Good for quick sanity checks.

Built in on iPhone · varies on Android · Free

Will that fridge fit through the doorway? Perfect. Planning a remodel around these numbers? No. Keep a real tape measure for anything that matters.

Floorplanner or RoomSketcher

Either / or

Drag-and-drop floor plan tools for experimenting with layouts.

Web · Free tiers · paid exports

Move the island, flip the bathroom, test furniture placement — before anyone draws anything for real. Floorplanner has the friendlier free tier; RoomSketcher produces prettier 3D views. Either works, so pick whichever interface clicks for you. The layout you tried and hated is as useful to us as the one you liked.

Phase 3

Budgeting & Financial

Real numbers, regional data, and what a monthly payment looks like.

PCI Cost Guides

Ours

Our published guides to real Sacramento-area remodel costs.

Ours · Free

Bathroom and kitchen ranges built from actual projects we've completed — not national averages that don't reflect California labor, Title 24, or local permit costs.

Remodeling Cost vs. Value Report

The industry's annual study of what projects cost and what they return at resale.

Web · Free (email required)

Broken out by region — look up the Pacific region data, not the national number. Worth remembering these figures are resale-focused: if you're staying put, the daily use of the space matters more than the recoup percentage.

Mortgage / HELOC Payment Calculator

Either / or

If you're financing the remodel, run the monthly numbers early.

Web · Free

Knowing the monthly payment you're comfortable with is often a clearer budget anchor than a total project number. This is informational only — the real conversation is with your lender.

Phase 4

Selections & Visualization

Narrow colors, tile, counters, and cabinets down to a shortlist you can actually decide from.

Sherwin-Williams Color Visualizer

Upload a photo of your room and test colors on your actual walls.

Web / iOS / Android · Free

Directional only. Always confirm with a painted sample in your own lighting before committing — screens lie about color, which is why we put physical samples on the wall for every project.

Benjamin Moore Color Portfolio

Benjamin Moore's version — clean interface, plus a color-matching camera.

iOS / Android / Web · Free

The camera is the standout: point it at a color you've seen somewhere and it identifies the closest match in their line.

Countertop Visualizer: MSI or Cambria

Either / or

Preview slab materials, edges, and color pairings before you visit a slab yard.

Web · Free

MSI covers the broadest range of materials (quartz, granite, marble, porcelain); Cambria is quartz-only with a slicker experience. Start with whichever matches your material direction. These get you to a shortlist — the slab yard makes the actual decision, because no two slabs are identical.

Tile Visualizer: Daltile Stylizer or The Tile Shop

Either / or

Try real tile products on a photo of your own bathroom or kitchen.

Web · Free

Switch patterns (herringbone, grid, stacked), sizes, and grout colors instantly — grout color changes the look of a tile more than most people expect. Daltile has the deepest product line; The Tile Shop pairs its tool with physical showrooms where you can go touch what you liked. Use these for direction on pattern, scale, and color, and we'll source the actual tile from there.

PCI Cabinet Style Quiz

Ours

Narrows your cabinet style, finish direction, and realistic budget range in about three minutes.

Ours · Free

Interactive and quick. Useful even if you're early — it gives you vocabulary for what you're drawn to, which makes every later conversation faster.

Phase 5

Protecting Yourself

Verify licenses and permits. This part takes minutes and matters.

CSLB License Check

Look up any California contractor's license, bond, and workers' comp in under a minute.

Web · cslb.ca.gov · Free

Check status, classification, bond, and workers' comp coverage before you sign anything. Any legitimate contractor will be glad you checked — if someone discourages you from looking them up, that tells you what you need to know. Ours is #1115328; go ahead.

Sacramento-Area Permit Portals

Either / or

Check what permits have been pulled on your home.

Web · Free

Useful before buying a house, and useful for confirming your own remodel is being permitted properly. Use the county portal for unincorporated addresses and the city portal for addresses inside Sacramento city limits.
